The Holy Rosary Society in Duluth was founded in 1876 by Polish women to praise and honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and to secure her patronage through recitation of the rosary. The Holy Rosary Society was moved to St. Mary Star of the Sea when this Polish Church was formed in 1883.
The St. Mary Star of the Sea Holy Rosary Society is part of the International Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, a spiritual association of the Catholic Church whose members strive to pray the entire rosary, the 3 original mysteries, over the course of a week to open its members to the grace of the Word through meditation on the life of Christ. The first Rosary Confraternity was established in the 1470’s through the preaching of Dominican friar Blessed Alan de la Roche, O.P. and soon there were associations established throughout Europe. St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, is the patron saint of the association due to his devotion to Mary and the rosary.
There are many spiritual benefits to membership in the Rosary Confraternity. Not only is it a way to deepen your devotion to Our Lady but you share in the prayers of thousands of members throughout the world, as well as the prayers and good works performed by the many members of the Dominican Order. At times, certain indulgences are granted to its members.
Today the Holy Rosary Society members promise to pray the mysteries of rosary every week, not only for their members but also for our parish and the people on our Prayer Chain. Members are asked to attend a monthly meeting where we pray together and see if there are ways we can service our church. Society members, as able, serve as lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, clean and prepare altar linens and vestments, serve at funeral lunches, as well as other volunteer tasks.
Membership in the St. Mary Star of the Sea Holy Rosary Society is currently open to all catholic women. In some locations men are also members but as our church has a men’s association, the St. Stanislaus Koska Society, traditionally only women belong.
We meet on the first Saturday of the month in the Social Hall at 1:30 PM. Contact Rosary President Renee Zurn at 218-723-1321 or [email protected] for more information.
